Group: Forum Members Posts: 346, Visits: 4.4K	Got nothing interesting and shiny ATM, but recently started on making some carbon fibre wheels for an Eco racer. This is the first one nearly ready for testing to ensure its strong enough! The bodywork when I get to it will also be a combination of carbon fibre, jute and flax which I'm quite looking forward to.

It passed the lateral load test with flying colours today, to the point I'm re evaluating the layup schedule for them as it now seems excessive. The clamps are to simulate it being bonded together at the outer edge as I haven't done that yet. Each wheel with tyre weigh 19kg and there was minimal deflection. I expect it to get even stronger when it is fully bonded

I'm really looking forward to the body work though as part of the Eco theming we'll be using as much flax and jute as possible It certainly does, when I started I was just doing little ducts and bits for cars, but I've since worked with a prosthetic part and tea trays, you never know what's coming. The compos could definitely do with being carbon, they weigh a ton. The person who got me interested in composites and taught me the basics was a guy called Steve Thomas who worked for Dymag and did a lot with their motorbike wheels. I don't the the full process but he showed me the inflatable bladder he had for making the spoked section of the wheel. We also have a Dymag rim which was part of a two piece wheel, the outer being carbon and the face being alloy
