99 Problems and a vac leak is one
If you having vac problems I feel bad for you son
I got 99 problems and a vac leak is one
 Hit me.

If there's one thing in life in sure of its that I hate vacuum bags and they hate me!

Rant over, just going to sit a dark room listening to aphex twin until I find normality returns.

Haha,

I was in a dark place.

If you want to make parts using composites then you will have to allow for major failures BUT also tiny soul destroying problems.

I'm lucky that I seem able to produce good usable patterns and have not had too many problems with my mould, I just don't get on with pulling a vacuum.

First go on my nosecone I bag taped the front of the mould but had a micro vac leak, I re did the bag and had another micro leak so I decided to bag the whole thing, again micro leak that actually got worse so I used my last bag and tap to still not get a vacuum.

No idea, ive duct taped the edges and covered the back to stop any punctures but still leaks, I shall get more bag and tape tomorrow and try again.

I feel you...

Strange no one has come up with some tricks to find those leaks.
How about filling it with air instead of vacuum and put it under water? like you do with bicycle tyres.
You see where the bubles come and there you have the leak.
Or maybe the other way around with some colored liquid, put the piece under that liquid and see where the liquid is pulled.

Or maybe EC could provide a professional home service where they respond to your breakdown call, come to your house and helps you find the leak

Haha, they pretty much do supply that sort of service!

Liquid would be a nono around your resin plus with the bags no being too expensive its a case of re doing it.

I'm VERY lucky in that I live only a few miles away from EC so if I need help I call in, Matt and Paul should have an award for their customer service its above and beyond.

I took my 5th attempt up and Paul sorted my leak out!

turns out I'm deaf from playing the drums in my youth, I cannot hear the leaks!!

Paul took about 3 minutes to find a micro hole, he could hear it I could not.

I'm still learning and familiarization is 50% of the job, the more you work with something the easier it becomes.

Ive now made the part and will post it up when I've time to upload the pictures, looks great!!!😊

I am yet to go down the vacuum route, but the "hearing it" comment makes me wonder if making a small hand held "sniffer" that listens for the leak is a potential option. My apologies for going OT, but if anyone thinks it's a scheme we can have a chat about it. As I said, I am yet to walk the dark road of vacuum bagging my first part, but I already feel your pain.

I have an infallible micro leak detector .. she's called Andrea and is 11 years old ... BigGrinw00tCool  Compared to me she can hear the grass grow!! Hehe
(25+ years of being an avid target shooter does not improve your hearing, even if you are very careful!)

To be sure, a set of good enclosed headphones, and a small amplified microphone would work, but i mostly just go get Andrea, or my Peltor electronic Earmuffs, and crank the volume right up, but they are not very good direction indicators.

Not sure about the sniffer as i believe they don't work with the very small leaks.

As you can read i had some problems with micro vac leaks on the nose cone.
I think its mostly down to me being as deaf as a mole so i will have to live with them.

Nose cone.

I have to say i was not looking forward to laying this up, i needed to put cuts in the cloth and the bowl shape made it hard to lay everything in.
Using peel ply i made templates for the CF and then having laid each piece i tacked them together with the spay glue.
I aimed to infuse from the centre of the part but found the task of taping spiral all the way around the perimeter a daunting task so went with
the easier option of feeding one side to the other.

First piece of CF in place.
You can see also the join in the mould.

The other 4 sides in place.
Looking good so far.

Finally part under vacuum, Cheers Paul.
Two more layers of CF plus peel ply and mesh and waiting resin.

Part way through the infusion.

Further on in the infusion,
i was panicking that the resin would not reach the two outer edges but all was ok.

Infusion finished Smile

Finished untrimmed part,
Im a very happy man.

There are a couple of VERY small marks and two tiny voids but its a virgin part from a virgin mould,
everything im doing is a first time part so im ok with minor after work.

Chris.

That looks fanfreeakingtastic! Wowzer man, well done, be proud.

I have a tony little part I will do soon, getting my stuff together, and will be oh so grateful to get a finish like that!

About the sniffer, apparently looking for the correct frequency sound is the trick (not that I know anything about it - that's what google said) I found a forum thread somewhere talking about a little circuit that plugs into a smartphone and you scan across the surface with a microphone to get visual clues regarding where a tiny leak comes from. The thread runs dead with no results though, but it does sound interesting. My hearing is pretty good, but if my Mrs found out by way of me finding leaks via hearing I would have a hard time explaining myself Smile
