Keep us posted then. I am currently working on a Formula Student car, and to gain some eco points we are using Jute and Flax for parts of the bodywork. It infuses well but does come out a bit of a poo brown colour

very nice! great work

I do find the use of jute and flax a bit of a false economy especially if your part needs some stiffness to it.  Both are very weak fabrics compared to carbons, so any environmental credentials are wiped out because you need to use more layers and as a consequence, more harmful resins to wet out the laminate.

Have to agree on some levels however the judges for the Formula Student seem to like it. Because of the shape of the bodywork, 2x200grm either side of 3mm Soric is pretty strong. Certainly strong enough for this application.

Got pictures of any of that work Warren? Those fabrics have interested me for some around-the-house objects that I was thinking of making...

The regs for our car require a minimum 1.5 body thickness around the driver, so a layer of carbon either side the 600g flax will be used to to bulk out these areas

Finished this on Tuesday night, tested on the water on Wednesday and hopefully down the cable park on Sunday. (Not me riding though, it's one of the British Team riders)


As it's a proof of concept you'll have to excuse the wrinkles and the pin holes!



It's a mix of all carbon 300 Bi-ax, 375 2/2 Twill, 6mm M80 core, carbon stringers with a bit of 650 in places and 200gsm on the footpads with a peel ply finish to add traction
