I've been looking around for a CNC cutter/laser to cut out certain standard shapes. We mainly use xpreg XC 110 and XC 130 (unidirectional). I came across the CNC-step machines. On their site it says they can cut prepreg with an oscillating knive, but in reality it turns out there are some issues. Does anyone know of a system or manufacturer that allows CNC cutting of prepreg materials?

Most CNC routers should be able to cut carbon sheet in 1mm dead easily. PCB cutters work very well for this purpose and are cheap and easily sourced and replaced when they get blunt.

Thanks for the quick response, just to be sure, you are also talking about uncured prepreg carbon? Do you have any experience with a certain company/brand?

Yes, but in this case it seems to me there is no protection foil/release film on the material. That leads me to think this is not uncured prepreg. I’ve asked a manufacturer but they said cutting cured fibre panels was not a problem, but they had difficulties cutting uncured fibres.

What Warren said :-) Cutters MUST be sharp.

I feel nobody is reading what the OP is actually asking haha.

OP, for what it's worth - I have tried an oscillating knife on a 6040 CNC router to cut uncured XC110. It was a disaster. The material tends to grab at the cutter after a few cuts, meaning it will start off cutting ok and then it will randomly grab the cutter and bunch and the cutter will proceed to ruin everything in true CNC fashion. I have no idea if this was due to the quality of the cutter, though it wasn't cheap (cost me about AU$300 for the single blade and holder). I also don't know if I could have got it to work with some effort, I gave up on the idea and decided that any pre-preg I am cutting on a 6040 bed is quick enough to cut by hand, even if it's a bit laborious.

It looks like uncured pre preg to me. Not all pre pregs necessarily have the plastic backer or maybe this machine works better without the plastic backer on the material?

What you see in that video may be more than just 1 layer, it could be more?
