Hi all first post here so hope i'm not posting in the wrong section, i've got a part i want to take a mould of to make carbon fibre copies of it. As you can see it's quite an awkward shape, how would you lot take a mould? 2 piece split mould if so would you go down the middle? 

I'm not sure I see why it couldn't be a one piece mould... 

so if i get the epoxy mould making starter kit it should be fine as a 1 piece?

Hanaldo is speaking as someone with expert knowledge and a lot of skill in mould making, forgive me mate

but

if you have limited experience of plugs and moulds you will find it hard to do as one, get the edge angles right and it will work but wrong and that thing will be locked, you may find it easier to split it down the middle.

i've got an order coming tomorrow, i'm going to try and do it as a one piece if i have no success then i'll got down the split mould route. I guess it's all just trial and error.

should be ok if you are very careful with the edge/ off part of the mould, just be very aware of how you run it.

As above, just make sure that your flanges around the part flare outwards, so no danger of inadvertantly locking the part in and having to break your mould. Pay particular attention when creating your draft angles with the wax/plasticine too and make the part to flange transition as smooth as you can without creating undercuts

well it's all done and demoulded, not a complete success but i can see where i've gone wrong. If i seen the post above about flaring the flanges out it would of been a complete success. At least i know where i've gone wrong for when i remould it, i'll get some pictures up later if i can.

That's a shame, but at least not a ton of materials wasted

What is the part by the way? At first glance, it does look like it'll present some challenges in trying to get fabric to conform to the angles.

it's a thumb grip off a steering wheel, thats my concern getting the carbon fibre to take to the angles
