This is an upper section/tacho mount for a classic race bike, the original part in glass fibre weighs 350 grams and the carbon component is 80 grams. I used wet lay and vacuum  bag. I will be making a complete fairing later this week for the same bike .

I have been able to get hold of an original mould for the bike fairing and although its polyester due to its age if should be ok, i have had to build temporary  flanges around it and i am going to use an envelope bag. I will upload some images this eve of the mould.

Below is an image of the mould for one side of the fairing, i have attached temporary flanges to it as i will not be able to cut the carbon to exactly the right size as the mould and this will allow me to trim it back to size. I have another fairing on production and will post more images later in the week.

Hi Chris, looks like a nice project. Can I ask why your not using Infusion as it sounds like you have a vac pump?

Yes i have a pump and all the items req ie spiral tube, why not use them ? a good question, i have had some good results using wet lay and vacuum bag and most the parts i make are  for go and not show and the race bodywork will be painted. I do feel tempted to use it on the next fairing . what is the current situation with suitable spray adhesives to hold the layers of cloth on place ? i may become a convert

Hi Chris, most of my work is Infusion and I have never used spray adhesive never found a need for it. Just make sure you make the flange as twice as big as you think you will need and just tape the reinforcement loosely to the flange with bits of masking tape. If its a really awkward mould with lots of vertical sides I sometimes apply GC 50 Clear Gelcoat from EC to the mould first. If you let this "tack off" it acts like spray tack holding you first layer of reinforcement in place. You can lift and re lay the cloth several times without loss of adhesion. It also gives UV protection and polishes well. Once mastered Infusion is quicker and cleaner than wet lay. It also allows you to control the resin to reinforcement ratio giving a lighter and stronger part.

Just like warren says, it's quite easy to work with infusion, just need a good prepartion.
