Hi all,

Just wanted to hear your methods and thoughts.

For my next project I am making a spoiler for a remote controlled car, which is a fairly simple curved design much like an F1 wing minus the side plates.

I am looking for a perfect cosmetic finish so I was intending on doing a resin infusion, however I would like a gloss finish on both sides of the part.

I have read about doing the infusion without peel ply and using a core material for flow media then just using vacuum bagging straight over the carbon fabric but this still wont give a perfect finish..

What are my options other than making two halves and gluing together?

Thanks in advance!

How thick will the final piece be and the dimensions of the part?

Sounds like a matched mould would work in the situation, giving A side finish both sides, if it's thin i.e. a few plys then you could probably infuse without media using a very low viscosity resin.

I'd be tempted to wet lay and compress with a top mould before messing around with infusion

Hi Chris,

Would this not squeeze too much resin out of the fabric under compression making it too dry? Maybe a flange would prevent too much resin escaping? How much compression are we talking here?

Thickness is around 3mm, its roughly 15cm in length and 4cm in width

Thanks for the response!

Is there a reason you're against making two separate halves and bonding them?

On such a small part, it's going to be a challenge to do it as one piece. I'm assuming pre-preg isnt an option? Wouldnt be too hard to get a perfect finish using a matched mould and pre-preg.

Hi Honaldo,

Bonding two halves together isn't a problem, although I was just looking for a more pure method.

A match mould is definitely an option however I don't have an oven for prepreg at current.

Thanks for the suggestions!
