Hi Dave
Wow, that's some road trip you've done! Great stuff!
Are you not tempted to chuck your reverse gearbox and save a chunk of weight? I did that last summer.
I've not been doing any carbon work either. I bought a Porsche 911 so I've been playing with that or the mountain bike.
I'll probably get back into the carbon during the winter nights.
Cheers

Bought myself a lathe and milling machine that i'm currently converting into a CNC mill with linuxcnc following this rabbit hole is taking up my time at the moment
Winters coming so lots of upgrades planned.

Hi Dave
Whats been happening with you? Have you been using your car rather than making carbon for it?

looking excellent as always, what plastic did you use as the base? Im making a split mould and only got some polycarbonate (perspex) but heard it may have issues with epoxy?

Finally cracked the Scuttle two part split mould today after about a week of preparing the pattern, gel coating, coupling and resin coating.
The gel coat gun worked very nice until my main compressor suddenly stopped working
just finished off with a brush the last coat, no problems.
Very happy with the results as this is my first attempt at a split mould!
Clean the plasticine and wax off, fix a couple of small holes in the gel coat near the pedal recess, compound and polish the mould and then layup/infusion time

Nah 6mm is ridiculous, you could sand blast with that! I use a 2.5mm nozzle on the HVLP gun for tooling gelcoats. I only use the HVLP for small intricate parts though, for larger parts like bonnets I use a G100 with a 4.2mm tip.
I'd recommend giving spraying tooling gel a go sometime, it really does improve the quality of your moulds.
I'm going to take that recommendation and treat myself to a G100 I usally get my stuff from easycomposites but there are no options for the nozzles that I can see, mmm ?

"
The standard 6mm nozzle is perfect for fast and consistent application
"
Will proberly get from here as they have a nozzle selection from 0.8 to 7.1mm and it comes with a 4.8mm
http://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/p-1698-g100-spray-gun.aspx
Nozzle suggestions:
Parting films – FN-1, FN-2.
Paints – FN – 3.
Resins – FN – 4.
Gelcoats – FN – 5, FN – 6.
Gelcoats with flake – FN – 7, FN – 8.
Sand blasting – FN – 9.

Hi Hanaldo, you
spray tooling gelcoats as well with a standard spray gun ? thought you needed a bigger
6mm nozzle or
Gelcoat spraying gun
rather than a
1.3mm ish nozzle for normal paints.
I have not really played around with Gelcoating yet, quite happy 2K clear coating my personal stuff, anything else I produce is supplied in naked carbon form.
But I would like to master the Gel coating process eventually ...
Just a quick update

Straight acetone haha. I always clean my guns by spraying 100mls of acetone through it. Gets rid of most of the build up, and stops anything else from going hard while I'm pulling it apart and cleaning it.
I spray tooling gelcoats as well, which are a huge issue if they start to go hard in the gun. Paint you can pick clean majority of the time, but if tooling gelcoat goes hard in there then it's good for the bin.
