its an inexpensive part of the stack so would just use the proper stuff you know that works perfect,

The correct infusion mesh is not expensive when you break down the stack and all you consumables, the risk of ruining a component and the lost time stops me even considering using anything other that the correct materials. 

I saw in my shop some garden mesh that looked the same as inf mesh I think it would do the job pretty well

From looking closely at the mesh, the vertical and horizontal strands of plastic are laid on top of each other meaning there is always a gap throughout the mesh.  I imagine the gap is key to resin flow.

A flat mesh with a tight fitting vacuum bag may well have minimal/no gaps and hence not flow well.

It is something special to be able to have a good air/resin-flow and can not be replaced by any DIY-materials as far as I know...

I mean, is it just a regular nylon/plastic mesh that is found in places like B&Q or is it a specialized product made specifically for resin infusions?
