Hi,

Any suggestions as to how to put a great looking logo onto a finished carbon fibre part? I'm thinking a logo in silver should look good against the carbon fibre background.

I'm guessing silver wording on a clear adhesive label would do if quality wasn't an issue, but how would you go about it if the only concern was making the finished part look really professional?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I use graphics quite a lot on my parts. I do it two ways. I invested in a Vinyl Plotter Cutter so I can cut my own graphics. The easiest way is to apply the graphics to the part and then clear coat over the top, this is ok but the graphics will still be slightly proud of the surrounding surface.
The other way is a bit more tricky. I spray the mould with GC50 Gelcoat, after about three hours and while the gelcoat is still tacky apply the graphics (cut in mirror image). I then continue with a normal infusion. This way the graphics become integral to the part encased in the resin.
If you don't have access to a plotter/cutter drop me a line I may be able to help.

Warren I'm glad you said that! I have been toying with the idea for a while as I use gc50 most of the time, I was only slightly concerned that it might effect the bond just where the graphics are. Have you tried any larger graphics/logos? Cheers Gavin

Hi, I did a sign for outside the workshop 1m x 1m with 80mm high letters and that turned out ok. I had the same concerns as you mention when I first tried it. I even put pin holes in the graphics to let the resin through to the GC50. I now work on the theory that when you spray the GC50 (assuming you do) you are left with a slight orange peel finish which seems to be enough to allow resin to flow between the graphics and the GC50.
Hope that makes sense.

Another way for embossed logo's is to put a mirror image vinyl on the mould and release coat over it.  You will likely need either a thicker vinyl or precisely place a few layers ontop of each other to get a deep recess.

Another method I use which is a bit more subtle is to use the vinyl graphics/ letters etc as a mask. Apply the graphics, Soda Blast the area, peel off the graphics and you are left with a subtle frosted glass finish contrasting the high gloss. Makes a really nice chess board Smile

Just a note from a failure that may help someone else.

I used a thermal transfer color print on clear in an attempt to seal a branding and serial number into the peel ply surface of a part. The sticker floated up and bonded with the peel ply and pulled the majority of it out of the part.

I'm thinking this time around, it goes on the support structure, in a glossy surface area so it wont peel out.

Should I use a perforated film to print onto to allow it to stay within the part as opposed to going to a surface?
