Acetone doesnt work on GC50 anymore. The formulation has changed slightly since our bonnet video was filmed.

Aha, that would explain it!
Does the new formulation offer any other benefits/changes? What would you recommend for a quick 1st layer spray tack? Aerofix 2? I have used meths+infusion resin before but it takes a heck of a long time to cure to a tack...

And then use the acetone trick to tack the first layer on the fully cured GC50?
(wtf is up with quoting a post, sorry for the mess)

It takes a bit of practice to get the timing right
in my workshop it's about three hours. I test an area around the flange, if you can feel the tack on your glove without the gelcoat actually sticking to it then you are good to go
If you get any large blobs/drips ( easily done ) in the gelcoat then just let it completely cure (overnight) then just flat them back with 1200's (dry)

Not huge - 3hp with 50l reservoir - just about keeps up... Hasn't given me any problems spraying parts as large as a bonnet...
Warren - re: getting a tack, I must have left it too late as no amount of spray acetone would generate tack - I was worried about going in with the cloth too early and ruining the finish....

Great Job James !
Could you share about the air compressor you used with the spray gun ? (model or spec if possible) I'm close to buy mine, but still hesitating about the tank volume (would 100 liters be enough for spraying a bonnet ?)
thanks a lot
J

Excellent work
I have been banging on about the benefits of GC50 for a while now (spray application)
UV protection, hard glass like finish and acts like a spray tack for the first surface layer (if you get the timing right) What is there not to like

My third infusion - and finally this one pulled straight from the mold and only needed a quick polish and trim to look like this!
Spraying GC50 into the mould with the G100 gel spray gun has transformed my pieces (I was pinhole free on infusion 2 but was having carbon exposed at the surface)
There has been a lot of discussion about problems brushing GC50 - I have to advise just getting the correct kit and spraying it...
