I have just had everything delivered to do resin infusion. I have made my mould, and am pretty much ready to go.
I am fairly nervous about making the 1st one. Does anybody have any tips on doing some kind of practice run?

The carbon material is rather expensive, and I was toying with the idea of using some other kind of fabric for a practice run, would this work the same?

Hi Sharper
Why not just follow Matt's instruction video on making a hood scoop. Instead of a mold use a piece of glass and infuse a 8 inch by 8 inch patch of carbon, perhaps 2 layers of 3k.
Hope this helps.

If I'm making something big and unknown, I do a trial run with woven glass the same spec as the carbon ill use. Also use it afterwards to check the fit etc

OK, so i did a practice run, and wow I'm glad that I did. I'd have mucked it up big time. Basically, I didn't get the thing air tight, and had almost every problem I have read about on here Blink
As my 1st ever go, I think it was worth a trial run, even if I did waste a few materials. Better than wasting a load of carbon material

You can also use polyester infusion resin to reduce the cost more but you can't really use it to check the speed of infusion due to the lower vac pressure, but still gives you an idea

i think for my first few pieces, i will use FG first part.
the 2nd maybe use polyester and CF for the visual first layer and FG and some sort of bulking material . same for the underside of what i am making(hoods/bonnets)

not sure if the expense of CF is worth it as i make my panels and learn on the job as it were.
once i am confident, then i ll try a full on CF part and see how i do.

i am a perfectionist, i suggest maybe not moving to the next stage of your process until you are sure you have
it ready to go. dont infuse until you have the setup holding a steady vacuum.

best of luck--

Scott

That is the nice thing about infusion. There is really no rush involved in the initial stages. You can really take your time doing the layup properly and making sure you have a 100% sealed bag. Once you are happy (it can take several hours and possibly a few vacuum bags when you are first starting out), then go ahead and carefully mix and degas resin, then infuse at the correct pace.

Planning and preparation make a big difference in your outcome.

cheers

Practicing with woven glass is a good idea as its a fraction of the cost of carbon.

That's really true... from my very little experience wet layup is really a mess and stressing experience if compared to infusion!
