Hi,
Is it possible to make sandwich panels using closed cell foam and pre-preg carbon fiber flat sheet? If so, what kind of adhesive would be required?
I would like to create a sandwich panel using 3mm thick foam and 0.25mm or 0.5mm sheet.

Hi Gerrit
We recommend using our
ET538Honeycomb Bonding Epoxy Adhesive
for bonding the foam core to carbon fibre sheeting.
You would need to key the surface of the sheet, then thinly spread the glue over the sheet. Apply the foam core and give it a wiggle when sat on the glue to ensure the glue fills into the rough surface rather than just sitting on top of the glue.
An alternative method would be to key the surface as before, then use our
Epoxy Rapid Repair Resin
brushed onto each panel to bond to the foam. The advantage of that is that the
Epoxy Rapid Repair Resin
has a high flexural strength under load.

Hi Warren,
Thanks for the speedy reply and advice. I just placed an order for some materials to try this out. I'll be using the epoxy resin, the high flexural strength is very useful for my application.

Hi Warren,
It worked like a charm. It's truly amazing how strong the panel becomes once the second layer of carbon sheet is glued to the foam. The thickness of the panels is 3.85mm (2 x 0.25mm sheet and 3mm foam) and weight is 48g. I would like to reduce the weight but I guess that would mean using resin infusion to directly bond the carbon fiber (90?) to the foam. Maybe I will try that later on but first I have to see if the panels can be used for their intended purpose.

Cool! glad it worked! one of our staff members made a similar panel using some Nomex honeycomb to reduce the weight even further for bulkheads in his RC plane.
