Hi, what do you use as sand blocks for fairing?
I watched some tutorials but they were all about wood working. Wonder if there is some adjustment specific for composites.
So...
Wood (btw, with or without pads)?
Foam? Xps would be ok
Commercial available? Ifound permagrit blocks fantastic but they only make the coarser grits.

Thanks

Get a 3M Hookit sanding block. Pricey, but absolutely worth the price, they are so good. Will make getting a flat surface much quicker and easier.

Thank you. I see there are many options, with or without vacuum connection and a long (70 cm) one.
Which one(s) do you recommend?

Vacuum really helps and works great, I would definitely recommend it. Even if you dont use it, it's nice to have the option.

I wouldn't get the long one or the medium one though. I have them, but have used them maybe once. Get the medium one. Can't remember the length, but it's like 200mm or something. not the smallest one, but the one up.

There are plenty of sanding blocks on the market.  You can even make your own carved from a stiff foam (or even wood).  Sometimes if you have a fixed shape a custom block can be useful.

if you are sanding specific geometry you can 3d print the blocks, allowing for an offset for the double sided tape and sand paper.

Currently just using a whole load to sand some carbon wheels, also if you are looking to buy some sanding blocks i can reccomend the perma-grit tools that easy composites sell.

Thanks Scottracing for the 3d print hint!

I already have the permagrits, unfortunately they stop at a quite coarse grits. Fantastic tools though!

yes i can highly recommend the 3d printed sanding blocks for specific geometries. i mostly use PETG as it is easy to print but a little more temperature resistant than PLA. And often you can just sand a profile into a junk of MDF on the belt sander and it does the same job.
