I bought a infusion starter kit from EC. In this kit I got a couple square meters of breather layer cloth. I have seen the instructions film on easy composites.com, but I have't seen a film with the breather cloth in use. So I have some questions:

- When should I use the breather cloth?
- Why do I use the breather cloth?
- How do I use the breather cloth?

Assuming it's the white cloth akin to a thin blanket, then you shouldn't need it for infusion, not unless you wish to pop a small square under your outlet connector to soak up a little resin before it enters the catch pot pipe. .

The cloth is used more commonly used when vacuum bagging to help soak up excess resin drawn from the part when vacuum is applied. It's probably been included for this reason, in case you wanted to try this alternative laminating process

Hi RedRocket; the Breather Fabric is something which we constantly consider as to whether it should or shouldn't be included within the kit. For some projects,  as per MarkMK's suggestion, it is used along with or instead of a resin break to act as a soaker or alternatively, and the predominant reason why it is in the kit, when envelope bagging or if you have any sharps (botls, nuts, fasteners, etc.) then the breather cloth can be used to protect agaisnst puncturing the vacuum bag - You're right to question though as for most Resin Infusion processes, it won't be necessary.

Is breather cloth necessary for a large (1500mm x 500mmx30mm), wet layup? I'm making a centerboard for my sailboat and i'm trying to figure out if i can DIY a vacuum setup with my home or shop vacuum.  I'm wondering if it is necessary to use breather fabric? I don't care about looks, only strength.  Thanks

Well...since you want to do wet layup, I think that breather cloth isn't necessary. Remember to use peel ply and a net.

Good luck.
