Or use a microballoons/resin mixture to fill the gap.

cut the foam core to a more precise profile and sand the edges to fit snuggly.

If you cant do that, then use carbon tape and chopped into strips offcuts of carbon to fill the edge.

Warren,

Kind thanks for the helpful reply!

As I plan out my splitter mold, I am concerned about the gap that will develop between the beveled edge of the mold and the vertical edgle of the divinycel.

And a pic of the "plug" for the splitter mold:

Was this a two piece mold? Did you make this similar to the bonnet hood instructional videos?

The reason I ask is I'm planning to make a large flat splitter soon. It has a beveled, leading edge in the design and I'm thinking I need to make a mold of the top AND bottom? It will be constructed around divinylcell. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, I normally do splitters like this it one hit but in this case the customer wanted a gloss finish on both top and bottom. A peel ply finish on the bottom is normally acceptable to most people.

I infused the top section and removed the peel ply but left the part in the mould. At the same time I infused some flat sheet. This was then trimmed slightly over size. 10mm closed cell foam was then cut to fit tightly inside the top section, epoxy adhesive applied to both surfaces, the flat sheet positioned on top and the whole thing re bagged and left to cure under vacuum. once cured the bottom sheet was trimmed flush with top using a router and a bearing guided cutter.
Hope that helps.

That ^ depends on the shape of the part. If you've got a rolled edge of the front of the part but no mechanical locks on the back then you can do it in one piece.

A nice carbon splitter is a good way to discourage people from excessive lowering of thier cars and driving too close to kerbs when parking end on.

A cunning plan indeed!

The mould for the main element is done, just needs release agent on it.  Need to do the second element now.
