Hi all
is it necessary to use infusion mesh on smaller parts? (< ½m2)
I suspect that it would work without,
and opposite that the resin would know about "the p
ath of least resistance
"
and not penetrate all the layers/fibres if it could flow more freely in the mesh.
How about just start with mesh the first cm´s?

Always use mesh from inlet into part but only to edge off part then use peel ply to vaccum side it acts as a resin break slowing down resin, which helps to saturate reienforcement.

I also put a small piece of mesh under the vac outlet. This helps in drawing the air out of the bag/reinforcement.

Thanks.
I remember something about slowing the resin down (just peelply) right after the spiral, for 2-3 cm, then have mesh for 10- suitable length,
anyone heard about this?

Just i few words re using infusion mesh, i am making a few frame guards for a customer and gave the small section of mesh and peel ply a try. The resin managed to move a short distance from the inlet then stopped dead, i had a 100% seal on the bag and full vacuum.

Chris, the mesh has to run the full length of the spiral and you need some mesh under the vac outlet. A piece of breather cloth under the vac outlet also helps as a choke. Standing the resin pot in some warm water also helps, this also helps to remove any small air bubbles from the resin. Also really stretch the spiral tube before you tape it down.

Don't even think about it. Use mesh. I tested what you are about to do. It failed. How much would you save by not using mesh? Its the cheapest part of infusion.

Hi Fred, for me it is not about the cost. On some small parts with recesses and tight angles the mesh can cause bridging, it is simply too stiff to follow the form. I use this method on a regular basis and if done correctly it does work.

Hi Warren
I did all of this except the breather part and placed mesh under the inlet and vac side, when i removed the uncompleted part from the mould the part that been infused had an excellent finish but the rest

What was your infusion path? Where and how long was the infusion spiral and mesh? What temp/viscosity was the resin? All these have a big effect on the outcome
