As Already said, Carbon dust is a killer. Our Dremel is kept high up with a long flexible shaft to keep the cutting away from the motor and it has lasted fine.

Carbon dust can damage many electrical goods.

I have a flexi shaft now for the new one.

Always use the flexible shaft when cutting carbon and polyester parts and keep the main unit higher - away from the dust. Had to destroy a dremel to learn.

Daz, as you said, it was new and full of dust and that killed it.

Carbon dust is highly conductive, you don't want that in and around your electronics. Most likely it shorted it out. You could clean it all up and try if it works, but unlikely.

Getting the flexible shaft is a good idea, got that and the dremmel is further away from the workpiece. Also I always work with some form of extraction to suck up the dust as it is created.
