S Group: Forum Members Posts: 11, Visits: 12	aluminium plate is not adhering to a carbon fiber laminate.Is it because my aluminium surface is too smooth? I tried etching process to make it rough.But It did not work out well.Is sanding a better option than etching?

When you say etch? What exactly do you mean? Its better to roughen up the ali surface with sand paper or other abrasives at least 240grit. Then clean with acetone and bond within a few hours.

By etching I mean using chromic acid to roughen the surface a bit

Sanding would be easier and faster imo, Degrease first with acetone or degreaser, use fresh cloth after cleaning everytime till you dont see any more residue on your cloth, that way you are sure no.....

Are you gluing the plate on ? Are you bonding it during manufacture Wet lay, infusion,pre preg ???

Is sanding enough? Is it used for making the surface rough or roving the oxide layers primarily... Also I'm using epoxy resin and hardener as adhesive... Thank you

didnt know it was cf tube on a plate :) I would sand and clean the surface that will be bonded on the carbonfiber tube and the plate, but you can do whatever you want :D it's just how I would do it.....

If you want ultimate strength with aluminium and epoxy then sand it through the wet epoxy. Messy, but effective.

Sir Sanding doesnt make the surface that rough. Is it a problem? It just leaves scratches

Are you rubbing down by hand ??? Ideally you should use a air tool ( 90deg die grinder) with a top of disc but by hand is just as good as long as the metal isn't shiny
