On my one I built on top of the 1st cured layer to make my shape by hand and then added one more layer pre preg to finish.

If you can "dismantle" the wheel rim then an easy solution would be the use of Carbon Fibre Braided sleeve.

Thanks, but it isn't possible to dismantle the steering wheel without cutting through the metal core, and I'm not willing to do that for safety reasons. The steering wheel I'm modifying is an extra OEM S2000 steering wheel that I bought specifically for this.

I'm going to have to use the 'skinning' method. Do you have any input as to whether the ProFinish carbon fiber would be helpful here, or would it be too stiff to wrap effectively around the rim of the steering wheel? Would I be better off with regular carbon fiber and hairspray? I'm concerned about the cut lines and keeping the weave aligned.

If it helps, here is a picture of an unmodified stock S2000 steering wheel for reference.

Using pre preg would easiest to do while also having clean cuts and better weave alignment.

Wet layup or infusion wrapping would be tricky and more difficult to than pre pregs in my opinion.

Going back to one of your original questions regarding fabric, I think that you'll get better results using a 240g twill fabric, rather than Profinish

Profinish doesn't drape very well, owing to its binder. The 240g fabric is very stable, compared to the usual 200g twill and a mist of spray tack along your intended cut line will help to keep things very neat. The 240g is also tighter in its weave, so gives a similar appearance to pre-preg when laminated

I’ve never done this and clearly from what others are saying, but won’t the heat from pre preg effect the foam and things when curing?

The foam would likely expand some but it seemed to work fine on the one I did, 100 degrees C.
