I am currently attempting to make myself a kayak paddle. I have chosen to use a carbon/Kevlar hybrid reinforcement on the front face of the paddle blades, I know that I won't be able to sand that reinforcement any after I infuse it without making a Harry mess of it so I am thinking about spraying a thin coat of epoxy onto the mold before I lay the reinforcements in to sorta after like a clear coat.
My question is, Will this effect the strength of the finished part and add much unnecessary weight?

Coating the mould face with epoxy resin could work although epoxies may not behave very well on the waxed/release coated mould surface. It usually runs and fish eyes etc. Also the epoxy will not have very good UV and will go flat with sun exposure. I have done other epoxy coats on moulds but I add a thickening powder like cabosil and this then makes it like honey so it will coat without fisheyes but this is not good for the resin clarity.
I am also making infused paddle blades soon with a new mould and I will be using Duratec Sunshield as I do with other moulded parts.

Right on, good advice!
I've been making my molds for the blades for two weeks now. Their 90% done.
Is the Duratce sunshield an additive for the epoxy?

Duratec is a polyester coating especially for in mould coatings designed to work with epoxy or other resin laminates.

No no, 12-15 'mils', or thou. Meaning 12-15 thousandths of an inch.
