Before I put the flanges on the tank to make the mould, does it matter if they are at 90 degrees or 180 degrees to the edge for infusion bagging

Hi Paul M, I am no master at mould making but I try to make the mould edge so that the carbon cloth has a few angles to follow. Personally would go with the second picture so the cloth can follow the natural flow of the edge without having to be bent over at a sharpe angle causing potential distortion in the weave on the edge.

Cheers for the reply, will go with that then, only thing I can see that is a bit awkward is the placement of the resin tube. There is a bracket that I have to bond onto the tank,so I could place it there,so if there is a mark left from the infusion it will be covered up.Another thing is the resin infusion spiral, would I put it all around the mould to help with the removal of the resin or just where the vacuum line is.Hope these are not stupid questions. The picture shows where the bracket will be mounted.Or I could put the resin tube on the flange, suppose it doesn't matter if it's flat or on an angle.
Cheers Paul

Most of my original moulds have the 90degree flange as I made them face down on a glass table, but I have recently moved to the more upright flange maybe not completely upright maybe 120-140degree but I do find it helps conformance issues around the edges. I don't put the spiral tube all the way round, I like to have an input and output spiral with a break so that the resin has to pass though the stack without being able to directly escape straight to the output. Depends on the mould really my RC car mould the input is in the middle of the stack with a complete 360 output spiral and two output lines on each end ... Also I alway envelope bag now.

Cheers ,more information for me,1 more question, does it make any difference which way you infuse, as in width or length ways. Cheers Paul

Now that's an interesting one mate, not really sure I usually infuse like this. please excuse my ascii art ------------------------ Out | | | | In ------------------------ or ------------------------ Out | | In | | Out ------------------------ I would imagine this is the best way as the resin only has to travel the shortest distance width ways, but I dunno never really done any experiments.

Once again thanks for the reply,I wasn't sure either, with the shape of the underside of the tank it looks like both width & length are about the same, if that sounds right,so it will be a toss of a coin when it comes to the layup.

When doing something like a motorbike tank, the top part will essentially be a big "bowl" -- Infusing that works really well with a central resin inlet as the lowest point in the "bowl" and "exit" all the way round at the top flanges- The problem is that you may get some print through from the input connector, so when I have done tanks (or tank covers) i have put the "resin inlet" at the place where the tank lid normally sits .. You will then cut out the distorted part anyway

Just made the flanges from dvd covers, hot glued them to the outside of the tank,I know, havn't got any flutted sighboard,as long as it works I don't mind, who mentioned Barney Bodger. My question is semi-release first then filliting wax or filliting wax first then semi-release,I have seen videos using both methods so Im not to sure.
