When you write "vents" do you mean where the hoses go through the bag, into the silicone "connectors" ?
You're clearly doing something wrong at that point then .. i always place the silicone connectors inside the bag, and seal up the bag, before puncturing it in the middle of the black silicone connector,
I make a small cross cut with a knife, no wider than the hole in the connector, then push the hose in, before winding some of the gum-tape around the hose just above the connector.
Make sure that you even out any creases in the vac-bag on top of the connector, then push the "ring" of gum-tape down onto the top. then flatten it out on top to seal against the bag, and squeeze it tight around the hose.. That works nearly every time for me... but the first few times it did not always produce a perfect seal. Like any of the processes in this "hobby" it takes a little practise.
