well .... the BST wheels i would like for my MVAgusta F4 are just under £2000,- for a set ... Only £180,- less than the forged Marchesinis already on the Bike ..Cool

I would save almost 3 kg's unsprung mass though ...

What is the price for a set of CF wheels ... How much equipment for building your own + a couple for destructive testing could you buy with that sort of money ?

Probably not ALL the equipment you would need ...

"Sapere Aude"... Dare to KNOW!

IF you do want to go the CF wheels route speak to Steve Thomas at C12 Composites ( http://www.c12cfd.co.uk/index.htm ) he designed and set up the manufacturing process for the original Dymag CF wheels

Hey Andy, this is a fantastic looking seat! I am in the process of making my own seat as well, just in fiberglass. I was thinking about using a layup similar to yours - 200, 2x650, core, 2x650, 200. Would you need to add more reinforcement using fiberglass only?

Hi Paul

I am not sure about the strength of it in F/G... I know mine is more than strong enough and a lot stiffer than the FIA seats I have in the garage including a C/F one!

I did seriously consider making CF wheels, but I think I would have to seriously over engineer them to ensure they are strong enough as I don't have the means to properly test them and thus I don't think I would save weight.

In terms of wheels, almost anything is possible with enough forthought but its likely to be very very difficult.  Nothing to say you cant in theory infuse a rim shape. However youve got to get the fabric to stay where it is, and ideally you don't want excessive spray tack usage in structural parts. Then the nature of infusion means it may not be perfectly even all the way round making balancing an issue.

Pre-pregs would be much more consistant and infinitely easier to lay up.

All the formula student ones I've seen used pre-pregs.  Some used multiple parts bonded together, others devised a more complicated one piece approach.  Some went for carbon rims and billet machined alloy centres.

Hi Warren
Sorry we didn't have a proper catchup at Autosport, wanted to have a proper chat... was a bit mad the entire weekend.

Do you have details or links to these wheels the formula students do? or do they keep it under wraps?

I keep thinking a wheel along the lines of the dymag car rims with a machined alloy centre (machine down a normal road rim) and a carbon rim.... I should be able to make a very stiff rim...

Not sold on pre prey being superior... I would like to add differing reinforcements such as Kevlar, is that available in pre preg?
