The Rear Wing I make uses a mixture of 200grm Carbon, Soric, Closed Cell Foam and Biaxial Glass. Made using Pre-Preg to get the same strength/load capacity it is heavier, much heavier. I have tried and tested both methods.

My Full Pre-preg Carbon body kit is all carbon apart from where is is not.....lol... I use pre-preg Diolen in the fuel tank section and the tank base is wet lay vacuum bagged so I can use the same Epoxy resin I seal the inside of the tank with and make the tank base fully from same resin so the ethanol does not attack the other epoxy resin used in the pre-preg... You need to use the best materials for the job... It is a true composite as it uses specific materials to give it the best properties possible...

Sorry to digress...

Your right. The problem is that they don't fully understand what they are asking for. There is a big buzz around Pre-Preg at the moment as in it is the "holy grail" Fact is it aint. I was lucky enough to be in the Aerospace Industry when Pre-Preg was being developed. It was done purely to reduce the manufacturing cost of Carbon parts. You can use semi-skilled people for the lay up and have better control over quality. A well infused part will out perform Pre-Preg.

I agree with what you are both saying, but when you're dealing with caterham owners for example, they are expecting pure prepreg carbon, some will even ask you for the layup schedule and weigh the parts at home. When they smash it, it's smashed, no matter what it's made of. If they even hear the word "glass", they're out the door. Which is understandable as there is a considerable weight difference between a pure carbon nosecone and one that's a mix. The same goes for the motocross boys.
For instance I make stone guards made from 520g of Diolen and 600g of glass, no carbon since there's no need for it.

There's nothing wrong with lowering costs, but when someone sells you a "carbon" wing, and you an see through it when you put it up to the light.....

Good choices Smile Winds me up when people claim to be making "the real deal" Lol

Yes I know... One company sell covers... Been told they are all carbon....

1. All carbon would be a waste of time in a crash....
2. For the price they charge they are no way all carbon... But claim they are...

Why not just say you use different materials to make the parts better and for a purpose??

Wozza. I use glass in my frame protectors and swing arm covers. The carbon is cosmetic to be honest and the Diolen and glass actually do all the work in a crash.....

Rich but if not to clear coat UV destroy your parts!

Not with polyester... I used one that is UV stable... Pre-pregs on the other hand I have clear coated for protection...
