Hi guys,
I’m just getting ready to try my hand at resin infusion to make some automotive panels with carbon fiber.
I’m wondering what is the best method for the finished surface? Is it best to add the clear gelcoat like in the easycomposite video or is it best to skip the gelcoat and finish with automotive clearcoat when the part is finished?
Thank you

In my own opinion; The best way is like it is shown in the Easy composites website to have a good finish and good part...
The gelcoat is optional, but its good to have it.

i think the best way of all would be gelcoat like the tutorial, and then clearcoat with high solids high quality clearcoat.
perhaps one of the staff here can address the UV light protections of resins. clearcoat has UV protections built into it.
Ultra Violet light is what breaks down paint (older paints, new materials are very UV resistant) and tops of carbon fiber panels.

The EC GC50 Gelcoat is excellent. It can be applied to the mould (I find spraying gives the best result). If you allow it to become tacky it also acts like spray tack making positioning of the first layer of reinforcement easier. Once infused and cured it gives a hard, UV resistant finish that polishes well. I use it quite a lot and it is much less hazardous than 2K Clear.
