Can Melamine sheet be used as a mould for GlassCast Epoxy resin? If so, do you need to use a release agent as well?

I have used melamine covered tabletops to lay up flat carbon sheet, both wet lay vacuum and prepreg. However, I do use a release agent.

Thanks for the reply, I am new to glass casting. Just to be clear my question re using melamine sheet was specific to epoxy resin. I am considering using melamine covered MDF to use as a 'flat' mould, I assume from your reply this is ok! See image for what I'm doing.

This prepreg is laid on to a melamine white board (the type used in presentations) with 6 applications of release agent. Not tried it without release agent, just not worth the risk of it sticking.

This panel was laid on an old flat pack desk top. The only issue I had was that I encased the whole thing in the vacuum bag and the heat and vacuum pulled the moisture out of the wood, resulting in many oil changes in the pump! I would normally just run tape around the edge of the wood but I needed the whole area for the part

Hi Haggis50,

Yes, you can use Melamine board as a tool surface but as per your assumption, will require a release agent to prevent the resin from bonding to the surface of the board itself. For a high-gloss finish and ease of application, I would recommend 3-4 coats of a Mould Release Wax such as the Meguiar's #8 that we sell through Easy Composites. This will create a physical barrier on the surface of the melamine and, unlike PVA Release Agent, retain the high gloss appearance.

If you were looking at series production, EasyLease could be considered but I'm guessing this is likely a one-off and so the wax will be perfectly fine.

Hi Rich, thanks for the repsonse. I already have EasyLease so will use that. Haggis

We use melamine boards as flanges when making prepreg tooling. Ive used both wax and chemical release on it.
