Hi Warren/guys

I've recently bought some of the new Clearpol polyester gelcoat to do a little bit of fibreglass work and noticed that it is very thin compared to other gelcoats I've used and smells somewhat different too which, I guess, is down to the particular formulation

It was well mixed prior to adding catalyst but fish-eyed very readily and didn't adhere too well to vertical sides, leading me to have to keep brushing over and apply a second coat. Its consistency was more like a resin than a gelcoat. Is it formulated for spraying ideally or is the low viscosity I've seen unusual?

Thanks

Had the styrene began to separate out during storage meaning the resin at the top was thinner than the stuff at the bottom?  Might be worth a check.  We have not noticed any significant differences batch to batch so it may well be fractionally thinner than the old gelcoat although it is hard to say without them side to side to compare.

What release agent are you using?

Hi Warren

It was only recently purchased and there was no feel of any thicker liquid at the base of the can when stirring, as you can often get with the fillers in the Unimould tooling resin, for example

I've used Easylease, so I'd expect a bit of fish-eyeing but the gelcoat itself is just much thinner than anything I've seen before. It's great for coverage and ease of brushing, though. I've not had chance to inspect the results yet but will let you know if anything looks wrong with the cured finish

After demould the surface has areas that are definitely not right. There are patches where the gel's bronken and some that are quite translucent, despite having a couple of coats and being pigmented black

I'm quite confident that I've not made any basic errors in application that might have led to the issues with the gelcoat finish so I think I'll the best approach might be to send the remainder of the can back so that you guys can have a look to see if it is as you'd expect. I have a feeling, though, that this particular can might not have been filled quite right, given the viscosity of the contents
