Sort of depends what kind of rubber it is. If it's a silicone (unlikely but possible), then you don't need to do much to it (but you will have trouble with getting the gel coat to form a nice surface on it!). If it is a natural rubber or a polyurethane elastomer (most likely), then you will need to use a release agent. For a natural rubber, PVA would be required to prevent the gelcoat from reacting with. For a polyurethane, standard release wax would do, or something like Stoner Rapid Release/Mann Ease 200.
