Infusion resin in a split mold, two parts.

Hi I am making a canoe, for this I am manufacturing the mold and I would like to do it in two parts, separated by keel split mold, I can make vacuum infusion or these type of molds do not work with infusion.

You can use split moulds, you need to seal the split lines.

You can gelcoat the mould and probably at least put a layer of fibreglass across the joins too just so the vacuum can not break through the gelcoat.

Thank you Fasta, sealing the board as you would, with plasticine on the inside so you do not notice the division, and with empty tape on the outside? I am a beginner.

If you were to use a gel coat then the finished part with come out of the mould with the split moulded into the new hull and sticking up slightly high.

Then you just wet sand and polish the join and it should be invisible.

Otra duda que tengo es con la cantidad de capas y materiales a elegir para el kayak, el sistema estará infusión de resina epoxi, estoy buscando el carbono menos posible, pero fuerte, lo mejor sería preimped pero no tengo una del horno tan grande para la curación de la pieza. Estaría bien para seguir el número de capas en la foto?

There are a couple of other ways to seal the mould too.

1) You can use silicone sealant. I believe it needs to be RTV type so it doesn't bond the moulds together.

2) You can lay a strip of 3mm wax sheet round the flange when you take the mould. Fill this with gum tape (careful not to stretch it so its under thickness) then align your bagging tape with the channel lines so that all the gum tape seals the mould. I believe Handalo is the man that rocks this technique.

Also don't forget that where bag size and practicality allows, envelope bagging is a great technique for working with split mouldings.
