This one got me thinking ...

Just for the fun of it I tried some of the EC profinish for skinning a small panel .. I did precisely what they did in the video ..

Layed it on and heated it gently with my heat gun ... and the profinish backside sticks on just like glue .. Cool  --  works a treat!!

I let it cool, then brushed on standard lamination Resin, and it stayed put .. BigGrin

I'm not sure it would work on complex compound surfaces, since the Profinish does not like to conform to that, and may not have enough "stick" to stay attached when applying the top layer of resin ..

Just to test it, i tried using cytec spray on another piece, and gave it a good layer, then let it dry completely .. it "reactivates" with the heat gun just the same way, but sticks much more to the part .. and needs a bit more heat ..

"Sapere Aude"... Dare to KNOW!

The written word is the only truly efficient vehicle for transmitting a complex concept from mind to mind...

Do not adjust our mind, theres a fault in reality :-)

Yes, that's all a set-weave carbon is. It's just a dry fabric, with a binder sprayed on it as you said. The binder is a polymer, and is often a b-staged epoxy. I'm sure I remember Paul saying when I was in England that the Profinish fabric uses an epoxy binder, but I could be remembering a different product.

That's what I was getting at with my original reply. I think the fabric being used in that video is simply a set-weave dry carbon fabric. These fabrics lose quite a lot of their drape and conformability because of the binder stopping the fibres from moving, but if you warm them up with a hair dryer then the binder loosens up a bit. It's very much like a pre-preg fabric, it's just partially impregnated.

any link of this carbon?

EC's Profinish carbon is one example of such a fabric.

This type of carbon is just dry carbon with a binder sprayed on one side to hold the weave from distorting too easy.  Just another style of dry carbon.

What's the hairdryer for?

Looks like everyday 200g dry twill carbon, stuck down with some adhesive and wet out like many do with wrapping parts.

Maybe the hairdryer is just meant to confuse us?

I think it will just be a set-weave carbon with a b-staged epoxy rather than any spray adhesives. Heat guns do give set-weave fabrics a bit more conformability.

I think it's only a thin layer of twill (maybe 160gr?) carbon, sprayed with glue before laying, covered with resin and clear coat..nothing so technical Smile
