400 can work, it's what I spray base coats on but I find it a bit rough for clear coat, you can often still see the scratches. This will depend on your coating though, thinner ones will fill less obviously.

I find 400 grit is ideal for surface prep, obviously ensuring that the surface is cleaned and free from any water or grease before clear coating.

A bit off-topic from Bob's question, but does anyone know how to get hold of Duratec Sunshield in the UK?

Sounds like a useful product for those without access to automotive spray facilities but struggling to find it here

Depends on the coating system. I use Duratec Sunshield, which is a high build coating and fills scratches really well, so for that you would use 120-180 grit. 

For regular coatings though, that is EXTREMELY course. So if you are using a regular automotive paint, then you'd want to be scuffing it up with 600-800 grit. I've seen people use as high as 1200 grit, but I would be questioning how good the mechanical adhesion is with that level of key.

What grade of wet and dry paper or what colour scratch pad is used to give a prepreg part a key ready for clearcoat ?.
