Hello all

This is my first time doing anything related to making moulds and finer glass panels but like everything else I want a steep learning curve and start big.
So my project...

My brother has the new Jaguar f type coupe and I want to create a mould of the car, to use for my kit car/replica project.

Can someone help me out, start from the top and basically outlined the steps I would have to undertake to prep the car and create the mould without damaging the car. I assume i can't do the whole car in one go and lift the mould off and taking the car apart isn't an option either, so whatever I do I have to do on the car.

If i start with with the following steps can you guys help add to it and help me develop a full plan

step 1 - clean the car
-remove contaminants
-remove wax

step 2 -
- Apply release agent to the car

Thats about as far as I've got :/

To tell you every step would involve a huge amount of time and typing. You are much better off getting onto YouTube and watching all the tutorial videos on there.

Doing it all on the car is going to be very difficult

But is it possible to do?

for example i know the bonnet wouldn't be a problem because thats horizontal anyway, but the doors are vertical - would the sheets used to layer the template stay up?

Hi Asad,
To be perfectly honest with you I think you will be getting  yourself into a whole world of  difficulties, especially as you are new to  mould making and all processes that go along with it, you will almost certainly damage the car. This is really not a good idea for a novice to undertake. May be you should go and buy a couple of  old panels from a scrap yard and have a play about with those first, 😉
                                                                                                     Kind Regards

I want to make the mould of a full car but my problem is I can't take the car apart to make the mould and i am new to this.
Is there something i can use, to lift the template of the car, and then use that to make the mould so i don't damage the car.

Something i can use to cover the whole car and lift its shape and detail if the makes sense?

You can't do this. Don't even try, it's a waste of perfectly good composite material and cars.
You have to disassemble the car and take moulds of individual parts. And you will only succeed with some experience, don't expect anything but failure if you have never done this before. You need to learn how to take molds from small, simple and cheap parts first, once you have mastered this you can progress to bigger projects.

Hi Asad,
I do not know of any such product to achieve what you want in profiling the car, Getting back  to the mould making there is a company called East Coast Fibreglass:  they supply mould making starter kits of varied sizes, these have all the materials you would need to make basic moulds, I think one of these would be ideal for you to have a go with on your golf !! Hope this helps??

easy composites also supply moulding kits.

the ideal process you seem to be after would be to 3d scan the vehicle and then mill a foam buck from the scan!

Are you wanting to make replica panels for the whole car, as in make the bonnet and doors so they're all fully functional? If so then no, you'll have to take the car apart.

Or are you saying you want to make a kit car body that is just one whole piece, kind of like the body of a nascar car (so you'd have to climb in through the windows). If this is the case then you could do it with a multiple piece mold (very multiple!) and just do the bonnet separate.
