A few months ago I've done a project and skinned some plastic parts from under the hood, engine area.



I've followed all the instructions but for me the basecoat didn't work at all and it didn't keep the CF fabric on the part at all. As I was applying the resin, the CF just came off from the plastic and the final part doesn't have all the nice lines. My first and only project as I saw that it didn't work on any of the 3 items that I've skinned.

Any idea why the why the CF fabric didn't stick completely on to the plastic and came off as I was applying the resin, why didn't the basecoat hold it proper? Should I have left the CF fabric on to the base coat longer to glue proper?

In working with carbonfiber there is no fast way, you'll have to do a lot of trying before getting it right

I've took my time with every step, followed all the instructions, sanded down, laid 3 coats of resin in total, at the end sprayed clear coat as the instruction. The biggest disappointment for me was that the CF fabric didn't stick proper on to the plastic part so was ruined from there. Waited for the basecoat to become tacky as the instruction, followed the correct mixing percentage on everything but unfortunately I probably didn't do something right, and can't figure it out ...

I'd say the basecoat was not tacky enough when you put the fabric down. Otherwise, what fabric did you use? Did you try to use EC's 'Pro Finish' fabric, with the binder on it to hold the weave together? If so, I suspect this would have caused issues as well. The bound CF fabric doesn't conform quite as well as your standard 2x2 twill weave fabric, it can bridge when the object is too complex.

Hi Hanaldo. Before I've started the project I've watched every possible video on the internet regarding CF skinning ... watched the Carbon Mod's video and EasyComposites ones also. Followed the right ratios when mixing but I've found that every time I've put down the basecoat on the 3 parts that I've skinned the basecoat was I think a bit to thin (watery) and wasn't as You said to tacky also. I've used normal CF 2x2 twill weave fabric and not the 'Pro Finish' one as I wasn't too sure if it will be very flexible to go on all the lines.

Yes I do think that with skinning the best way it will be with a vacuum bag because like thatl the material will take all the lines and won't come off.

What kind of bags can You recommend me for skinning, because I saw that on infusion projects they use a few materials also, and won't the bag be glued on to the part also because of the resin?
