cnc would moulding for carbonfiber?

Group: Awaiting Activation Posts: 1, Visits: 2	Hi, I'm a newbee in carbonfiber, I want to do some parts by it and I have a cnc machine to create the mould. The cheapest material in access for me is wood, but I'm not sure if it is at all possible to use wood as mould material. Once I asked this from a carbonfiber seller on ebay and the answer was a big "No"! I thought to write here may be somone may point me to a tutorial to turn wood to a mould or to teach me a material very cheap to use for mould and that I can put it under cnc. My cnc machine can handle x=55cm, y=40cm, z=6cm, but untill now I only made things by wood and sometimes small aluminium shaft for hobby robots. I don't have access to aluminum for mould making. Also sorry for my English, not native, may have mistakes. Thank you.

Group: Forum Members Posts: 955, Visits: 3.4K	I've heard its possible to use wood, BUT you'll have to seal it with epoxy/polyester.... The problem is you will have some sanding to do... which can take a lot of time to sand to have a perfect mould... you'll have to take care not to sand to deep, so you'r not sanding into the wood and so on. A thing you can do is CNC-cut the part you would like to have, sand it and make a mould of it... you can perfectly sand,pollish hard wood to a good finish and use a release agent on it so that your mould will come of easylie The problem with wood, i've heard, is that its not completely without air leaks.... maybe you could use a High density PU foam, but it will have to be High density, the less you go in density the more you will have small airbubbles in the foam. It's easy to sand and get a good finnish out of it. An other way but way more expensive is to use Aluminium or some type of metal. Group: Forum Members Posts: 12, Visits: 74	matthieutje65 (12/09/2012) Aluminium is quit expensive if you want to make a mould you need quit a big massive block of Aluminium Yeah but his mill is only small, so I don't think he's going to be machining massive slabs of anything Ally compared to good quality PU or epoxy model board isn't actually too expensive, especially when you take into account the time it would take to get a compareable surface finish by sealing lesser quality materials.
