Fasta is right that in a number of situations, especially for this cores (where the weight of the bond-line is a more significant percentage of the overall core weight) that using a foam without an adhesive film (Rohacell IG-F for example) that you can reduce the overall weight of a sandwich panel. There's certainly nothing wrong with using aluminium or Nomex and there are situations where their properties are preferable over a foam but it's definitely something worth considering. Rohacell (which is a PMI foam) also has the advantage that is has a reasonably high temperature tolerance and so is well suited to use with prepregs.
