The coloured carbon cloths use a polyester fabric for the coloured section. The polyester is tighter woven than the carbon itself so it is a bit harder to soak up resin than the carbon. This could explain the fact it frays easier and does not have the same amount of resin in it when sanded.
Normally when infused, the slower infusion process for larger panels means the polyester fully wets out before the resin begins to gel. This can be improved by slowing down the infusion. For a wet lay, you can help by using a bristle roller to consolidate the layers as the bristles will help get the air out and help the resin get between the fibres.
