Have to say that has been the best solution for me to ^

Unfortunately it is something that you really only accept once you have a lot of material stock. When you've got a 100m roll of vac bag, it's not hard to throw away 2 metres and start again. When you've only got 5 or 10 metres, you're counting every cm. And that fear of throwing away 2 metres of precious bag and then spending the time rebagging, only to find your new bag is leaking to...

My favourite materials in my shop are my 3 big rolls of vac bag and my boxes of bagging tape!

In our workshop we have a rule of spending no more than 10 minutes looking for a leak before rebagging. Chances are if you can't find it after 10 minutes, you may never find it.  It is often quicker and easier to start afresh taking a bit more extra care so you get that sealed bag you want.

My opinion is that they aren't worth the investment. They don't do the job consistently enough to pay for themselves, more often than not you spend more time going crazy going over and over the part with the leak detector, only to give the sealant tape one last squeeze in desperation and it seals up perfectly.

Will try to find the schematic I used to wire mine up.

I have been using the Accutrack VPE for about 10 years now, faultless and finds leaks easy.

What's needed for a do it yourself job Hanaldo? Well worth a go if the required components are cheap enough.

A quick scan around the interweb seemed to show units advertised as suitable for finding vacuum leaks for around $350 (VPE was a popular search result).

Although my bagging up is getting more consistent of late, just wondered if the off-the shelf items are effective, as the investment might be worth it  in time saved alone?

Cheers

Yep. Build your own, they are super simple. No need to spend $900 on one when you can build one for $30.

They aren't miracle workers though, you won't be able to find every leak. It's more like 50/50.
