Good morning All from Gloucestershire

I am new to this forum but not new to composites as I had worked for over 10 years at a Motorsport manufactures composite shop ( prepeg only and rather large Autoclaves)

I have on the road a 3.5 litre Dax Rush Kit Car and have decided to dabble with some home made composites and start to upgrade some part on the car.

My first project is to remake its bonnet scope in carbon fibre, I have purchased a Uni-mould kit from easy composites which I intend to lay up the scoop mould over the bank holiday weekend.

I am starting on the cheap first and will see if I can wet lay up a carbon skin or two first (once the mould is finished) to see what sort of finish I can get as I don't have access to ovens for curing and before investing in vacuum pumps and resin infusion etc as funds are a little tight.

So I am looking forward to asking for advice and welcoming comments on how to produce some good carbon parts for my car.

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian,

Nice to have a fellow Rush'er on the forums!

Never had any "decent" results using wet lay but I gave up with this process quite quickly after a few test pieces.
I use VARTM resin infusion exclusively now even though it can be a bit of a pain but the results are a lot more consistent if you take the time in preperation and getting a good vacuum.

You really don't need an oven, I have a glass table that I use to heat my moulds, but I have also had good results with a simple electric blanket from Argos Smile
Investing in a small vacuum pump is a good starting place and will save a lot of messing around with wet laying, the other reason I prefer resin infusion the smell is kept to a minimum as everything is bagged up once the infusion lines are clamped.

I made mould of the Dax Rush bonnet scoop about a year ago and extended it upwards about 30mm ish to allow clearance for my Hayabusa throttle bodies.

I contacted Man Motorsport about making carbon fibre products with the original moulds but they are not interested, to be honest after seeing the moulds before the project was sold I don't think the moulds are going to last long anyway as they were abused and seen their best day, there was plasticine filling gaps/holes in mould finishes as no one knew/cared to fix them Crying

Anyway welcome to the Forums!!

I'm looking forward to following your composite projects, as Gaz said lot's of pictures please Smile
