Apart from the pleasing look of pure carbon twill in comparison to carbon kevlar twill of the same weight, why choose carbon instead over the stronger hybrid version? say in a car panel.

Price is comparable so in theory the hybrid offers the better performance? Ferrari used the hybrid extensively in the F40, why is it that supercar builders these days use pure carbon, even when the panel is to be painted?

Because Kevlar isn't stronger? It totally depends on what the desired properties of the laminate are. Carbon has the highest ultimate tensile strength, compressive strength and flexural strength of any composite material. Simply put, if strength-to-weight is the goal then pure carbon is the way to achieve it.

Kevlar has other properties that would make it desirable in certain applications, the obvious ones being impact and abrasion resistance. It also has good fatigue resistance, though that isn't of great concern in most automotive applications. It is also much cheaper than carbon, which I suspect will be a major factor in why it was used in the F40.

All in all, most automotive composite structures need to be stiff first and foremost. Carbon is twice as stiff as glass. I also suspect that the price of carbon is much better than it was, and so modern supercars can utilise it much more efficiently.
