Sorry not to have posted any of my bike build recently but i have had to leave it as ive been making a part for a mate.
Ive managed to do a couple of small moulds for my gsxr and will update in the near future

so i thought i would post a picture of the cover i made for the mates races bike.
Its a VFR 400 NC30, he's having a small ally tank mounted under the cover.

You know it makes sense, should definitely treat it to a carbon coat.👍

One problem is that not all micro-leaks make a sound ... Crying   so even an Andrea is not "infallible" -- I was inspired however, so I'm working on an electronic solution/aid -

It's basically just a small stereo headphone amplifier with an input jack for my very old Sony stereo Mic (From a long defunct "Walkman Pro" Smooooth)  But I will try to add some sort of circuitry that adds a high frequency (ultrasonic) input as well .. it should be possible to do a "frequency divider"  to be able to hear the higher freqs, and mix them with the ordinary audible ones..  The problem old gits have is a lack of sensitivity to high frequencies.. Andreas ears can detect up to 19 KHz .. my ears stop at 12  - 13 KHz (and that's very good for someone my age and hobbies!!)

The nose-cone looks Awesome!!   Good job there!!   I want to make one now for my Agusta -- w00t

I think we all need an Andrea.

Hoping that with a little more experience I will get less leaks.

Leak detectors do work, and if you have the electrical knowledge to knock one up yourself for 30 bucks then they are absolutely worth it. Mine has saved me a few times.

I would just never splash out $1000 for a 'proper' one, given how simple they are (I don't like paying through the nose for things that cost a piece of chewing gum to make). They also aren't a miracle saviour, they won't find the leak every time especially if your part is complex. I'd say if I've got a leak, I've got a 50/50 chance of finding it with the leak detector.

It normally ALWAYS finds a hole in the bag though. Every time. Holes make a lot of noise, whereas leaks through the sealant tape are very silent.

That looks fanfreeakingtastic! Wowzer man, well done, be proud.

I have a tony little part I will do soon, getting my stuff together, and will be oh so grateful to get a finish like that!

About the sniffer, apparently looking for the correct frequency sound is the trick (not that I know anything about it - that's what google said) I found a forum thread somewhere talking about a little circuit that plugs into a smartphone and you scan across the surface with a microphone to get visual clues regarding where a tiny leak comes from. The thread runs dead with no results though, but it does sound interesting. My hearing is pretty good, but if my Mrs found out by way of me finding leaks via hearing I would have a hard time explaining myself Smile

Not sure about the sniffer as i believe they don't work with the very small leaks.

As you can read i had some problems with micro vac leaks on the nose cone.
I think its mostly down to me being as deaf as a mole so i will have to live with them.

Nose cone.

I have to say i was not looking forward to laying this up, i needed to put cuts in the cloth and the bowl shape made it hard to lay everything in.
Using peel ply i made templates for the CF and then having laid each piece i tacked them together with the spay glue.
I aimed to infuse from the centre of the part but found the task of taping spiral all the way around the perimeter a daunting task so went with
the easier option of feeding one side to the other.

First piece of CF in place.
You can see also the join in the mould.

The other 4 sides in place.
Looking good so far.

Finally part under vacuum, Cheers Paul.
Two more layers of CF plus peel ply and mesh and waiting resin.

Part way through the infusion.

Further on in the infusion,
i was panicking that the resin would not reach the two outer edges but all was ok.

Infusion finished Smile

Finished untrimmed part,
Im a very happy man.

There are a couple of VERY small marks and two tiny voids but its a virgin part from a virgin mould,
everything im doing is a first time part so im ok with minor after work.

I have an infallible micro leak detector .. she's called Andrea and is 11 years old ... BigGrinw00tCool  Compared to me she can hear the grass grow!! Hehe
(25+ years of being an avid target shooter does not improve your hearing, even if you are very careful!)

To be sure, a set of good enclosed headphones, and a small amplified microphone would work, but i mostly just go get Andrea, or my Peltor electronic Earmuffs, and crank the volume right up, but they are not very good direction indicators.

I am yet to go down the vacuum route, but the "hearing it" comment makes me wonder if making a small hand held "sniffer" that listens for the leak is a potential option. My apologies for going OT, but if anyone thinks it's a scheme we can have a chat about it. As I said, I am yet to walk the dark road of vacuum bagging my first part, but I already feel your pain.
