Davro,  knew you'd be up for a laugh!  The British carbon bake off!  Haha

Do you have a one piece alloy floor front to rear? Do you have a big enough surface to make a carbon version on? The biggest bit of glass I own is still being used, its bolted to the front of my house filling a gap. I think your carbon thingamabobs will be a big hit!

Lol The British Carbon bake off, fancy a photo shoot one day ? Im in North London ...

The floor on mine is in two peices passengers and drivers side with a tunnel in the center for the prop shaft and transfer box.
I plan on producing the floor pan in multiple sections with inspiration from the Delta wing and BLAT technologies Smile

Not need to unbolt the window just lay it up in situ, and do a vertical infusion !

Hi Dave

Blat technology sounds very appropriate! You'll be fitting a big fan at the rear for more downforce as well? Like the Brabham car.

Yip, if I did a vertical infusion on my window I'd need to get Matthieu across from Belgium to help, he's the expert in that field I think. You seen his video on that? Pretty cool.

Anyway, enough of the banter.  Smile

Here's a few pics of the bonnet mould progress.

This is in the middle of putting the 4 of layers glass and the tooling resin on. Why couldn't it be a nice blue or red colour? Makes you want to spew after looking at tooling resin for a few hours.....

This is what I was using tonight. Needed supervision, for 3+ years and over. This tub came with 4 fun moulds! Pity one of them wasn't a bonnet mould, would have saved me a lot of time....

Nearly ready to start laying up the second part of the mould, a picture frame type of thing to cover the return edges all the way around the bonnet.

Yup I saw Matthieu's multiple part vertical infusion, interesting ...

Your bonnet mould is progressing along, I have put my bonnet moulds on hold for the moment as I have been driving about in the sunshine Smile
I was going to make the nose cone mould able to bolt onto the bonnet mould so I could have either a multi part bonnet or bolt the moulds together and have a one peice carbon fibre bonnet Smile

Quick update and excuses......

The bonnet mould turned out not bad but similar to the nose cone mould its got a complete covering of 'swimming pool style' surface finish. Not sure what caused it because the scuttle mould has a very good, flat reflective surface and I did everything the same. Anybody got any ideas whats causing this?

3 piece bonnet mould

Wavy surface reflections look terrible.

So after spending a full week sanding the nosecone mould I decided I wasn't going to repeat that process, I went and bought a compressor and a load of air tools to speed up the sanding process.

Wish I'd bought orbital sanders years ago now, they are brilliant things! Saved me days and days of hand sanding. Still need to finish each grade by hand tho to get the best finish.

So I was working away on this mould when I decided I didn't have enough carbonfiber in my life. So I ordered one of these to cheer myself up.....

A YT Industries Tues Carbon downhill mtb. 200mm of suspension travel front and rear hung from a full carbon frame.

Apparently the carbon frame saves 1kg over the alloy framed version which seems pretty good going. The pair of wheels seem to weigh as much as the rest of the bike put together, lol.
I won't do the bike justice but it's a great flying machine for the hills near me.

So this is my excuse as to why the carbon bonnet may take longer than expected....... Smile

The surface reflections will probably be caused by uneven shrinkage. Happens when the exotherm gets too hot, so perhaps indicating that you were a little resin rich. How many layers did you do in one hit? Have you got areas that might be thicker than others, ie. where sections of fibreglass overlap?

It could be the gel although the Unimould is very low shrinkage.

It could also be over application of Easy Lease.  Over application or not taking off the excess, can cause a bit of wavyness or hazyness in the surface.  In extreme cases it can build up enough to almost feel sticky.

Thanks for both your replies, much appreciated.

Hanaldo. Yeah, I was thinking the problem was heat related. However I did that mould just the same as my others. Four layers in one hit. Yeah, the corners would be thicker than the rest but again just like all my other moulds. Heat wise the only thing I thought was maybe I positioned the electric fan heater too close when it was curing. Not sure.

Warren. I never knew that. That would tie up with what I did. After the carbon nosecone was nearly stuck in its mould I was paranoid about the bonnet sticking so I ended up using lots of Easylease and I bet I didn't buff it off enough. Some of the distortion was quite extreme tho. Some areas were at least 3mm off the flat, I've sanded through the gel coat in some places just to get it flat again. Anyway, I'll know for the next time. Thanks.

No more carbon progress I'm afraid, been too busy out playing like a kid on my new bike,  lol.
Little video of the new carbon bike in action.

Nice video, hope you and the bike are ok after the ending Wink

Youtube embed does seem to be broken on this forum, due to the https protocol change.
The forum only allows http embed not https so you have to embed manually, change ( brackets for [ brackets  (YouTube)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7j1N-3s3QM(/YouTube) if you get my gist.
