Let's hear some opinions on number of carbon layers for non structural panels of a race car.
E.g. a front bumper and fenders. Need to be rigid enough for high speed but doesn't need to take any other forces as aero devices are fitted to the structure of the car.

Would e.g. 1 top layer 200 gram with a 2nd layer of 650 gram mat be sufficient?

2 layers of scrim Wink

it all depends on the shape of the bodywork, you could quite easily get 1x90g / core / 1x90 to work

but in reality, I'd look at 1x200 / core / 1x200.... with your schedule you'd be looking at 1.7kg /m2, I've been in a full bodied racer with GF bodywork that only weighed 10kg

Thanks. What type of core would you use? E.g Lantor Coremat 1.4mm?

Chris is bang on in our experience.  Either a PVC core or Soric/3D core will work fine in 3mm thickness.  Coremat will be ok with wetlay but not vacuum processing and also it does have a relatively high resin uptake to consider.

for my carbon body I used:
200g carbon surface layer
200g carbon
soric core 2mm
200g carbon
200g carbon or Kevlar (wheel arches etc)

This is as strong as the original heavy GRP panels I replaced it with and was around 30-40% of the weight. If it was a race car I would remove the second 200g layers of carbon on each side.

To make it even lighter you can use a different core that has loads less resin uptake, Ive used this in the roof of my car as it can just about cope with the double curve of my roof and flat surfaces.

Of cause you need to be aware that if you go really small layup then the pattern of the core will show on the surface.

Thanks. How would the Soric core work in wet lay with vacuum bag?
Or would an infusion layup be worth the extra work compared to wet lay?

I only do resin infusion but i can't think of a reason soric will not work with wet lay... if weight is an issue/factor I recon resin infusion has to be the way to go anyhow.
