I am thinking of constructing a shower enclosure using toughened glass sheets (up to 1400mm x2500mm x8mm thick), and coating the back of the glass with a coloured gel coat / resin  / epoxy.

I have been quoted £2600 to purchase factory made coloured glass splash backs which is outside of my budget!

A plain / metallic grey (aluminium powdered?) would be the preferred finished colour.

UV stability will not be much of an issue due to very low natural light levels indoors.

I would like some advise on what would be the most suited gel coat / resin / epoxy that would bond well to glass, and could provide a good uniform colour (not opaque).

Hi Sean, not sure if you are wanting to make the actual enclosure or the wall panels as you mention splash backs?

Is it just to add a "coloured background"/ prevent "see-through" of the glass? If that's the case, you can simply sand-blast the back side of the glass, and use 2-component auto spray paint on the matted surface, it will be just as strong as a layer of epoxy or poly resin.  And you can get it any colour you like 

The Audi "Dolphin Grey Metallic" is very nice ......

I did a dark edge around my bathroom mirror that way, taped up the area not to loose its silver reflective backing, sandblasted it ,taped up the outer edge leaving a 4 cm wide matte glass area for the LED backlight, and a  matte dark grey edge.

Yes, just wanting to colour the back of the glass. I am worried that if I bond the glass to the wall using building adhesive or mastic, will this pull the paint from the glass? 

If you're buying the glass panels, then order them matted on one side... job done..

The acids for etching glass are truly nasty stuff ... you do not want to play around with that..     (flourine acid ... yiikes...  )

If the paint is done properly, then bonding with normal building bonding adhesives will not damage it, you may need to wet sand the paint very lightly to get the stuff to bond properly.
(and degrease!!)
