Hi, has any one used wax sheet when making molds e.g. making a cover for a part.

after applying wax sheet to the part I applies some wax release hoping after several wax applications and polishing i will apply PVA but for some wired reason the wax reacted with the sheet and caused it to become sticky and gummy which ended up messing the smooth texture of the wax sheet Sad, has anyone had this experience and how did they overcome this issue, lastly maybe my work flow was flawed in a way and it will be great if you could point me in the right direction and share the correct steps you follow leading to a perfect mold.

I use wax sheet quite a lot, this is my method.

1: Apply wax/release agent to the part/mould ( I use EC Easylease)
2: Lay the sheet wax (sticky side down) over the part/mould. If the part is concave gentle heat via a heat gun will help the sheet fall into the mould. Use gentle finger pressure to coax the sheet into the contours.
3: No release agent is required on the wax sheet for obvious reasons.
4: Apply gel coat. I spray the gel coat however it can be applied by brush but be careful not to get brush strokes in the wax.
5: Once the gel coat is cured apply your chosen mould material. I use the EC Uni-Mould system.
6: Once cured split the mould from the part. The wax sheet should be stuck to the mould not the part.
7: The wax sheet can now be scraped off with a plastic scraper.
8: A polish and the mould is ready for use.

Hope the attached photos help.

Warren.
