Hi
On my car i have two heatshields where one of them are a tad rusty.
And they are heavy also..
So i figured i should try make them in carbon or twaron or whatever you guys recommend.
But with the high temp resin.

But since it is a car used on trackdays the turbos will generate quite some heat, also since they are working a bit overtime as the car is tuned.

Now two questions.
1. will the part withstand the heat generated? it is really hard measuring the heat due to the placement of the turbo/shield.
2. what happens if the heat is to much? will the resin/carbon ignite?
3. Optionally i have heat reflective goldtape  if thats of any use.

Sorry for the big pictures.

Here is the shield in question

Distance between  turbo and shield. (the turbo itself is also shielded, i wont mess with that particular part)
You see the part in question just right of the turbo.

High temp ceramic and special resins aren't cheap. There's a company near Oxford that do composite heat shields, think they are called ss tube technology. Also zircotec do a lot of flexible heat shield materials now which may be suitable for you

You'll need to get an infra-red thermometer and measure what heat the parts will see. A heat shield sitting right next to the exhaust on a turbocharged track car isn't unlikely to see 200 degrees, which would be too hot for even the high temperature resin.

That said, I do think the worst that would happen is severe discolouration and potentially cracking. It would take prolonged exposure to extreme heat for the resin to ignite, in which case you would have more serious issues than burnt heat shields.

Ok, Thanks Hanaldo.

Also how do i post cure this resin?
The TDS says i should leave it at 80degrees for 3hours.
But im pretty sure i read somewhere i should ramp up the temperatures over time?

Any best practices to get the best out of this resin?

Ramps are only necessary with pre-preg or if you are post-curing out of the mould. The easiest way to post cure is to do it before demoulding the part, so you can just put the part in the oven and leave it.

Hi, bit late to chip in but better then never!

As already mentioned, Zircoflex, Nimbus or Cirrus heat shields would probably be the better solution for this application. If you wanted to pretty up the thing, you could do a decorative CF cover. Use the materials developed for that application - they are not massively expensive either for what they do and can be formed reasonably accurately to the shape you want.

I'd go with nimbus for this.  It's very light and definitely works.  The risk of a moulding catching fire in an engine bay is not something I'd want to chance and that one will be pushing it!
