Hi folks,

I've posed this question in the mould making section a few days ago but I'm looking for a more definitive answer from you guys.

I've been using the above on my current project (model aircraft) and have been impressed with it's hardness when cured. But I find it's quite thick to brush on and doesn't flow very well, leaving quite an irregular surface .  Is it possible to thin it slightly so that it flattens out better?

Many thanks, Marty

Thinning these things is never a good idea.

Try cutting the bristles on your brush down to about half an inch long before applying the gelcoat.

It's not supposed to flow well, it's a gel coat. It's supposed to be thick enough not to run when applied to a vertical surface.

It's viscosity may decrease if you increase the resin temperature to 20-25deg (see the TDS though to check before you do it to get an idea of the pot life)

ChrisR is right, The Epoxy Tooling Gelcoat is deliberately viscous.

Hi folks,

I hear what you're saying, I just thought it would be good to be able to brush it on and not have the 'ploughed field' contours left by the brush for the GF to follow.

I'll try a small amount and warm it slightly.

Thank guys, Marty

The 'ploughed field' is on the back so wont affect your mould surface.  If you're worried you can double gel coat your plug to be extra certain.  The furrows will fill with the backing material once you start building up your mould.

Reading the TDS for the easy composites gel, you should apply a minimum of 2 coats anyway

You can be light with the brush on your second application to minimise the brush marks if its an issue.  Remember also your backing layer, wether it is putty or wet laid glass fibre, should be going on when the gel is still tacky.  When at that stage, rolling flat any fibreglass will likely squish most of the brush marks anyway.
