I'm using Dremel 3000 along with a diamond wheel which is not cheap either at around 20EUR. It does the trick for about 30-40cm and then goes dull. It only cuts when the dremel is at it's highest setting. Anything less and it barely scratches the surface. It seems as if when the resin is heated while cutting, it sticks on the wheel and dulls it. I don't know if that's whats happening but I can see that the dimond wheel is covered with thick black stuff. I can sand it down with some abrasive paper but that doesn't seem to improve anything. Can anybody help me with that? Any methods for cleaning/sharpening the diamond wheel?

If your wheels gum up it means your parts are not cured and still soft. Put some parts into your oven and cure completely say 150 f for a few hours.
I cut my carbon with a Dremel with the shaft extension and cheap diamond disks. (some one shows these in a lower post on this list)
I also use permagrit discs, but I perfer the diamond for my small parts. I don't have a buildup problem at all. I also go through Kevlar no problem with the diamond discs. Permagrit and kevlar! forget it!
Hope this helps.

For long straight cuts, is a bandsaw worthwhile? We will be making some floor sections for one of our cars, and since all the edges will be straight, it seems sensible to get a bandsaw to do the job - does anyone have any experience of this?

Have to agree with the perma grit stuff. I bought the small sanding block and mini cutting wheel a while ago. I´ve only used the wheel once so far but it cut really easy. The sanding block however has built 2 kayaks and paddles completely. That includes sanding/shaping plywood, sanding fiberglass and carbon and even for the fairing. Plus it´s done other bits and pieces around the house including sanding aluminium door frame. It still works as good as new! I can´t even guess at how much sandpaper it has saved me.

Yep I do love my perma-grit disks! work like a charm, do not get clogged either! I use a flexi-shaft on a regular dremmel.

To get into tight sections I use some of dremmel's own tungsten carbide accessories. Also great.

cheers

Remember that when cutting the sheets with a rotary tool that the heat can get quite high causing the resin to begin to melt/burn and hence come off on the cutting wheel.

This can happen on all kinds of discs albeit the more coarse the disc, the more capacity for resin to stick.

We usually recommend tungsten carbide cutting discs (such as the Perma-Bond range) and we use one in daily use in our workshop.  Yes they can get a bit of carbon build up but not usually a problem and often our discs last a good 6 months of daily use where they could be cutting 10-20 medium sized items every day during the week.

We do use one of the more powerful Fortiflex range dremel tools as they can be located clear of the carbon dust and use a foot pedal.

Expensive? Try these.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TZ-6PC-MINI-Diamond-Cutting-Discs-Fit-Rotary-Tool-Mini-Dremel-Drills-Cut-Off-/190612661602?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item2c61666562

I tried the Perma-grit disks but found them too coarse.

Also, if residue is sticking to the disks is your work cured fully?

Brian.

Yeah maybe it is cheaper but I pay 0,25 euro for one and it never let me down. I would love to try perma-grit but they are out of my reach, because shipping to poland is too expensive, I am collecting order and I will order bigger parcel at once to save money ;D
