I finish of  parts with a layer of coating resin applied to a cured and sanded part. could i paint the part with a spray can ( car paint ?) then sand and coat with coating resin and get a good result?

if so do i need a specific type of paint.

I do not have a compressor etc.

thanks

So you want to have the best finish ? Glossy etc? The best way is to coat part with resin, then sand smooth and spray automotive can clearcoat

No, i want a painted design under the coating resin. In the past i have only coated onto wood or carbon or cloth but never onto  a painted surface, will it work , what paints are good what to avoid ?

I see, so best way to do it is to paint your pattern on the cured element and then coat it again with resin or some clearcoat

It should work by painting it and then coat it with a coating resin... but a good hint I can give you is test it out on a scrap-part before doing the real job.
I've seen some spraypaints reacting with an epoxyresin (causing the spraypaint to bubble)

Yeah dont think you should coat those normal spray can paints...

Might get unwanted results.

If it is a "normal" RAL color, you could just put some pigment in your coating resin, save yourself a lot of work. Then sand and polish.

Matthieu is dead right.

Rattle can paints are loaded with solvants which can take months to fully go at room temperature. The solvants can react badly with resins.

There are a ton of things that individuals ignore and some of the most innocent things take a lot of work. Car paint, for example, has to undergo a lot of screening before it can get put on a car. Car paint testing involves exposing shades of paint to years of intense climate conditions to see if it can stand up. Article source: Car Paint Testing.

I've recently finished this video on my youtube-channel concerning clearcoating and so on, might be interesting for some of you!
