Should basecoat be stirred prior to mixing with hardener?

Sometimes it is possible for the pigment to settle slightly so gentle stirring is recommended.

I was concerned with stirring the basecoat prior to combining it with the hardener because I didn't want to introduce additional bubbles. However, the coat didn't look fully black, it was more translucent than I thought it would be. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?
